The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
