The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in First Speech
In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Navigating External Headwinds

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
