Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
